Deodorant is one of those hygiene items that doesn’t quite feel like it belongs in the “beauty” category in my brain, but when I think about it…why would body wash or scrubs if deodorant didn’t? It’s a weird one, but I think this Zak deodorant is a good introduction into the deodorant world for Up the Rollercoaster.
Zak is a body care company based in Colorado that wants to make deodorant healthy and effective. It’s been my experience so far that deodorants can either be one or the other – either they’re natural/aluminum free/etc and not very effective, or they’re effective and have less than satisfactory ingredients. So I was mighty eager to try a new one! All while crossing my fingers that finally, I would find the holy grail of deodorants.
Zak deodorant is aluminum-free, paraben-free, phtalate-free, GMO-free and has no artificial fragrances, preservatives or petroleum products. They are a cruelty-free company (yay!) that makes everything in small batches and with organic essential oils.
I tried the Elevate scent of Zak deodorant. When trying to choose which scent to pick I was at a bit of a loss, if I’m honest. The names Elevate and Energize don’t tell you a lot about the scent (there is also an unscented version for those of you with sensitive noses). Elevate is described as having notes of sage, rose geranium and vanilla but all I can really smell is the sage with just a hint of vanilla at the end. It’s not unpleasant, but it’s not a scent I would choose regularly.
At first I loved Zak deodorant. The formula was a little bit stiff, so it was a bit difficult to apply, but I don’t mind that at all. Especially because it kept my pits stink-free all day! Waahooo! I was so excited – finally, a natural deodorant that works! And then about two weeks into my use of Zak deodorant…my arm pits got itchy.
At first I put it down to the heat. Halifax was going through a big heat wave, so I figured it was probably that, and took extra care to make sure my pits stayed clean. But nope. The itchiness remained and soon there was a fury of angry red bumps covering my arm pits. I have never experienced something more annoying than itchy, sweaty armpits. You want to scratch…but it’s sweaty. Which is gross.
Unfortunately for me something in the formula didn’t react well with my skin. I have a few theories – the deodorants are made with coconut oil, which could have been clogging up my pores, or I could be reacting to an essential oil – but mostly I’m just sad that this deodorant didn’t work out well for me. It held such promise, and I loved it so much for the first two weeks of our short-lived relationship.
I am still determined to find the perfect natural deodorant for me. It may not be a Zak deodorant, but it’s got to be out there!
